OUR STORY.

In the beginning, MRO focused on small chapel services held at the track. The goal was to offer a familiar sense of church amid the fast-paced environment of professional racing. It quickly became apparent that the need for support extended beyond drivers to crew members, officials, and their families. The ministry adapted, ensuring that everyone involved in the motorsport world had access to spiritual care, regardless of where the next race took place.

Over time, MRO expanded its activities beyond chapel services. Counseling, crisis support, and officiating life events, such as weddings and funerals, became integral parts of its mission. One of the most significant moments in the organization’s history was during the 2001 Daytona 500, following the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt. In moments like these, MRO has been a steady presence, offering comfort and guidance during times of grief.

By 2014, the ministry celebrated its 25th anniversary. With a growing team of staff and volunteers, MRO had evolved into a mobile church that traveled with the NASCAR circuit, operating out of motor coaches and trailers. This model allowed them to deliver not only spiritual services but also emotional and practical support to those on the road week after week.

MRO’s strength lies in its ability to integrate seamlessly into the racing lifestyle, offering faith and support in a way that fits the unique environment of motorsport. The organization has become a trusted part of the racing community, not just through chapel services but by being present at every step—whether during the highs of victory or the challenges of loss. Milestones, such as anniversaries and personal achievements, are often celebrated with MRO, further cementing its role as a valued part of the NASCAR family.

After Max Helton’s passing in 2008, Billy Mauldin, who joined MRO in 1999, took on leadership of the organization. Under Mauldin’s guidance, the ministry has continued to thrive, staying true to its mission of serving the motorsport community’s spiritual needs.

MRO’s ongoing presence at races demonstrates its commitment to meeting people where they are, adapting faith to the fast-paced world of professional racing. Whether offering a moment of prayer before a race or providing support in times of crisis, MRO ensures that spiritual care is always accessible. The organization remains dedicated to being a constant source of faith, hope, and community for everyone involved in motorsports.
