Lowes Motor Speedway Outreach Reports
Cheryl, we had a great two weeks at Rock City Campground. Some of our activities included the information booth with Christian materials, free coffee, lemonade and water; bluegrass music by the Southern Express; gospel music and praise bands; free pancake breakfast; pinewood Derby and face painting for the kids; free hot dogs for lunch, show cars including a Prowler, Viper, and a 40's style race car; a concert by Trackside-the Band with special guest, Morgan Shepherd; gospel music; wrestling with our Christian friend, George South, a full breakfast - eggs, grits, and the works!; a recognition service for veterans, a racing ministry called Auto Racing Outreach with our brother in Christ, Greg Berkey, a lot of good preaching, witnessing and ministering, and much, much more!!
Some of our statistics:
28 decisions over the two weeks
est. 4,000 meals served
approx. 40 volunteers
approx. 12 churches involved
approx. 375 Bibles given away
At the concert on Friday night, David Tate and some others started talking to a race fan about the Lord. The guy had had too many alcoholic beverages during the day and into the night. He finally told the volunteers that he was in no condition to make any decisions, and that he would sleep on it and come back the next day. Of course, we wondered if he would ever come back, but the next morning while we were serving the pancake breakfast, he came back and asked Jesus to come into his heart. What a blessing! The rest of the weekend he came back by the tent to talk, to see what was going on, and to show us his Mountain Dew that he was drinking! He is from Lynchburg, VA. Please pray for him, as he told us that his wife is atheist. We got his name and other information so we could follow up with him.
Another race fan, 73 years old, told us that he had been coming to the race at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the last 20 years. The seven other men that have come with him for the past several years all have passed away in the last 18 months due to their age/health. He told us that the last friend had just passed away on April 3rd. He told us that a couple of years ago when this friend first started coming with him, he brought him to one of our church services. Before that, his friend had not been to church in years He said the next weekend when they were home, his friend started going to church with him, and became a very faithful church member. We asked him, "Did he know the Lord." And our new friend said, "Oh, yes!" We give Jesus the praise for all that was accomplished!
We made a lot of new friends. We even had Christian race fans that were staying at the campground that saw what was going on and wanted to be involved in the ministry, and would just show up to help. I have some pictures, but cannot seem to attach them to this email. I hope this is what you are looking for, and also that it's not too late to include this in your report. We'll talk to you soon!

At the Peninsula, we lost our tents - both of them on the first day during severe storms. Campers gathered around the ruins of our main tent like people at a funeral and one finally spoke up and said "So.. where am I going to get coffee in the morning?" We all burst out laughing! Yet the next morning at 6:45am we had people on site with coffee and going to work cleaning up the mess. The efforts paid off as our campers were so appreciative of the effort it took to regroup and get things up and running. All week we had a blast shuttling people around the track, praying with them, getting to know our new neighbors and getting caught up with our old friends. The highlight of the week came Sunday morning. We had our annual Pancake Breakfast where we fed over 1200 pancakes to 600+ campers - and had six decisions for Christ including a young woman named Tia. She'd been with us off and on all week as she needed shuttling around the track due to a knee injury she'd recently sustained at home. What's even more interesting is that her injury came with a slip on the stairs at home after safely returning from IRAQ where she'd just finished a tour of duty. On Memorial Weekend, with the chapel message being about "Jesus, The Original Memorial Day Hero!", Tia opened up her heart and life to welcome the One who came to set her free! It was our best RFO ever at the Peninsula
